1981 was a great year in American history, full of events still impacting us today. NASA launched the first space shuttle, the Columbia. Ronald Reagan appointed the first female justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, to the U.S. Supreme Court. And Steven Moore first glimpsed Katherine Howie.
From that simple meeting in 1981, scores of us are drawn together to celebrate at an estate in Las Vegas 37 years and 8 months later! (...the Katherine and Steven meeting, not the Reagan and O'Connor meeting... just to be clear.)
Here is a user's guide to the weekend.
***Important to know***
All events will be taking place at the same location, which is a mansion in south Las Vegas which we are calling the BiltMoore (not its actual name). Due to our agreement with our friend and host, we can't put the address on the Internet. Everybody should have received multiple emails that contain the address. Text Mark at 405-818-6824 if you need assistance in finding the location when you get there.
Family Only Events in Italics
Thursday, April 19th, 2018
Location: on site at the mansion
5pm to 8pm: Grilled chicken and hamburgers with sides. Steven will be cooking his "Famous on Three Continents Grilled Chicken" which will be temporarily renamed for the day "Steven & Katherine's Love Chicken."
We are going to shut it down a little early because Friday will be a big day, and the bride and groom will be getting up early. The bride earlier than the groom.
Friday, April 20, 2018
Location: We will send the address of the venue along with the invitations. In the meantime, feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for the address. On the day of, please text Mark at 405-818-6824.
For our purposes here, we'll call it the BiltMoore mansion.
10:30am: Family only private wedding ceremony. Please arrive half an hour early at 10am.
12pm: Luncheon for the wedding guests.
3:30pm: Wedding reception at the BiltMoore for all invited guests.
Attire: Elegant attire is requested. Blue suede shoes optional.
Elegant attire means elegant on a lawn in Las Vegas, which may differ from the elegance of east coast ball rooms.
What to expect: Champagne, hors d'Oeuvres, classic toasts and embarrassing stories about the bride and groom.
6:00pm: The newlyweds are going to the Strip for dinner. The rest of the celebrants are going freestyle - shows, casinos, dance clubs. You have seen the movies, you know what happens in Vegas.

Fiftieth Birthday Celebration
Location: The BiltMoore (email us at email@example.com for specifics)
11:30am: The party starts slowly at 11:30 Saturday morning (as will you) with bagels and donuts, mimosas and Bloody Marys. We will keep you fed and "watered" for as long as you stay. We’ll bring in some barbecue in the afternoon and anticipate some late-night pizzas. There will be plenty of soft drinks, beer, wine and champagne for even more toasting!
Attire: Very casual. Laid back. This is largely an outdoor party. Being comfortable is more important than being cosmopolitan. Bring shorts for the day and something to wear when the desert night turns chilly. And swim gear. We have two pools and a swim up bar. With somewhere around 12 bathrooms (it is easy to lose track), showering should be relatively easy.
Activities: Former Arista recording artist The Tammy Graham Band (A Tom Howie and Lisa Nelson Production) will be playing from 1pm to 4pm. The Graham band will be playing all your favorite covers, and does live karaoke! You can get up and sing with the band, and we expect many of you to do so.
Also playing will be Las Vegas bluegrass sensation Crossfire! (A Tom Howie and Lisa Nelson Production) The best Western band you have never heard of.
We also have lawn games, swimming, exotic cocktails and exclusive movie screenings (SPOILER ALERT: we were messing around in Russia's election long before they started messing around with ours), poker and maybe a high stakes trivia game.
What to Expect: Come and stay, come and go, or come and go and come back. We also hope to have some of our very talented friends and family play live music and our less talented friends sing karaoke. You can expect trivia contests, poker, blackjack and s’Moores (get it?) around the fire pit.
The Weekend Ethos
Vegas is not a conventional environment and as you can tell, our wedding celebration is unlikely to conform to the norms of a conventional wedding.
For instance, we do not want conventional gifts. Anyone who spends their time and treasure to celebrate with us in Vegas is giving us the perfect gift. Both of us moved out of three-bedroom houses, so we have moved a combined six bedrooms worth of stuff into our two-bedroom apartment. We have all the stuff we need, and then some. Our streamlined lifestyle is focused on travel, adventure and outdoor sports. If you feel compelled to give us a gift in addition to your presence or well wishes from afar, gift cards in small denominations travel well and don’t take up much storage space.
We are looking forward to this celebration as an occasion for us to spend time with all of the people who are so important to us and a time for all of you to meet one another - We hope you can make it to our wedding/birthday weekend!
Invitations to follow. Feel free to reach out to us now with questions, comments or funny stories to tell at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Where to Sleep in the City of Lights
The Entertainment Capital of the World has no shortage of places to stay while you are being entertained.
The BiltMoore Mansion (not it's real name) is about fifteen minutes due west of the Encore.
If Katherine and Steven were coming to your wedding at our compound we’d stay on the Strip and take an Uber to the BiltMoore. An Uber is about $10 to $15 to our (ahem) crib if you take it from the Encore. Vegas also has a lot of taxis.
You can spend as much or as little as you like for a room on the Strip. GoSeek.com seems to have reduced prices vs. other travel sites.
If you want to stay close to our action, rather than the action on the Strip, options abound around the BiltMoore. The Westgate Flamingo Bay Resort is about a ten minute drive, with rooms around $120. AirBnB and VRBO has quite a few places near by and are quite economical, especially for groups larger than two.
Of course, you always have the option of not sleeping.
